Adhan Clock

Adhan Clock for Android

One app on any Android phone, tablet or Google TV in the house. It shows the clock full screen, plays the adhan on the device, and casts it to the Nest speakers, Nest Hubs and speaker groups you pick, at every prayer. The prayer times are the same as on this site, worked out on the device, so it keeps going when the internet drops.

Checking for the latest version...

Not in Google Play yet. Android shows a warning for apps from outside Play; the steps below say what to tap. Needs Android 5.0 or later. Google Play services are not needed, so it also runs on Fire tablets.

Install on a phone or tablet

  1. On the phone, open this page in Chrome and tap Download Adhan Clock for Android.
  2. Open the downloaded file. On Android 8.0 and later, Android asks you to allow Install unknown apps for Chrome (or your file app): allow it, go back, tap Install. On Android 7.1 and earlier, turn on Unknown sources in Settings, Security first. (Android: unknown apps)
  3. Open Adhan Clock. You can turn Install unknown apps off again afterwards.

Install on a Fire tablet

  1. Turn on Apps from Unknown Sources. On Fire tablets it is in Settings, Security & Privacy (to confirm on your tablet; Amazon names this setting on its Fire TV page).
  2. Open this page in the Silk browser, tap Download, open the file and tap Install.

Install on Google TV or Android TV

TVs have no Chrome, so use one of these. Either way the app then appears in the TV's apps row and works with the remote.

With a computer (ADB)

  1. On the TV, turn on Developer options, then USB debugging or, on Android 11 and later, Wireless debugging.
  2. On the computer, with Android's platform tools: adb connect TV_IP_ADDRESS:5555 (Android 10 and earlier, after adb tcpip 5555 over USB) or adb pair (Android 11 and later), then adb install adhan-clock.apk. (Android: adb)

With a downloader app on the TV

A downloader app from the TV's store can fetch https://adhantv.live/downloads/adhan-clock.apk and install it. The TV then asks to allow installs from that app, as on a phone. The names of these apps and their menus vary (to confirm on your TV).

Set up, once

  1. Open Adhan Clock. The clock asks for your location (or a city) and your adhans, as on this site.
  2. Press Settings (bottom corner, or the Menu button on a TV remote).
  3. Under Cast to speakers and displays, tick each Nest speaker, Nest Hub or speaker group that should play the adhan. The phone must be on the same Wi-Fi as the speakers.
  4. Under Keep it on time, tap the buttons shown there (exact alarms, battery optimisation). Each says why.
  5. Tap Play the next adhan now to test. Done.

For a phone or tablet that stays on the wall: turn on Keep the screen on and, to come back by itself after a power cut, Start after a power cut. The old device guide covers power and screen care.

Permissions, and why

PermissionWhy
Alarms (exact alarms)To start at the exact prayer time, even when the phone is idle.
Run at start-upTo set the next prayer alarm again after a restart.
NotificationsAndroid shows a notification while an adhan plays, with a Stop button.
Location (only when you tap "Use my location")To find your prayer times. It stays on the device.
Wi-Fi and multicastTo find the Cast speakers on your Wi-Fi.
Battery optimisation exemption (asked once)Battery savers can delay the adhan. The app only wakes the phone at prayer times.

No account, no tracking. The app keeps your choices on the device.

Battery savers on Samsung, Xiaomi and others

Some makers add their own battery savers on top of Android's, which can stop alarms. If an adhan is late or missing, look in the phone's battery settings for Adhan Clock and allow it to run in the background. The exact menu names differ by maker and version (to confirm on your phone).
